Exploring the use of textures in lifestyle photography

The Backstory

Back in 2017, I was approached by the owner of Bearded Crew to create their complete branding and product line design. From then until 2020, I continued to carry their brand identity.

When I bought a camera, the line of Breaded Crew products became one of the many subjects for developing my product photography skills.

Exploring Textures

As this was early on in my photography journey, the photos are simple. I attempted to support the product with a texture-rich environment. Bearded Crew were focusing on the "manly lifestyle" aspect of their products, and I wanted to support that focus.

The cigar box and pipe were objects I had laying around, but early photos were lacking the character I was hoping to capture. Eventually I found the rabbit fur in a local antique store and couldn't resist the texture it provided.

The set is simple. The editing is heavy. If I were to approach this project again, the biggest change I would make is to focus on dynamic lighting in both the photo shoot and editing. The "faded" look was appealing to me at the time, but the character it provides is nowhere near the excitement and drama present in higher contrast editing that I prefer now.
